At the age of 24, Charles found himself facing a challenging period in life, mainly due to his mental health condition. However, a turning point came when he was referred to one of our Community Recovery Mental Health homes in the heart of Coffs Harbour, where he finally felt a sense of connection.
Since moving to the recovery home and receiving continuous support from Momentum Collective’s Case Coordinator, Debra, Charles has experienced a newfound sense of safety and authenticity in her presence. Their bond has grown stronger, particularly as Debra has personally experienced a crisis in her life, too.
Their journey began with Charles in a state of emotional withdrawal, without meaningful relationships. His move into the recovery home brought new hope into his life.
“My mindset wasn’t the best before moving into my recovery home. I was homeless and wasn’t taking the time to form a picture of what I wanted to do and how I wanted my life to be. I had spent a lot of time in the hospital and was referred to Momentum’s recovery home as it looked like a good place to rest and recuperate,” says Charles.
With Momentum’s support, Charles experienced a significant shift in mindset. He began to gain confidence in taking on daily challenges and exploring new horizons. He found comfort in being himself around Debra, who offered support in his journey toward personal goals, all at his own pace.
“It was a big challenge, and it took me some time to accept the idea of being in a supported recovery home. Once I realised the staff were nice and I could develop friendships with my housemates, I felt grateful to be here.”
One of the most memorable moments in Charles’ year was his 24th birthday, which Momentum staff and his housemates celebrated together. Charle’s housemates and staff made his day special with a festive dinner, a birthday cake, and the delightful surprise of seeing Deb dressed up as a clown.
