At Momentum Collective, our Empower teams in Tweed Heads and Casino regions plan regular inclusive disco events for clients living with a disability. These dance nights, which started as an annual event, have become so popular that they are now a regular occurrence.
Events like the disco sessions, have many positive benefits for people living with a disability. Dancing is a therapeutic exercise that can improve emotional, mental, and physical health. It also provides an opportunity to socialize with other participants and make new friends in a safe and inclusive environment.
At every Empower disco our Momentum staff coordinate, there is always a massive smile on participants’ faces as they feel the rhythm of the music, dress up in costumes and enjoy dancing with their peers and Support Workers.
“Everyone who comes to our disco nights is excited, and there is usually a lot of hype around the event theme and outfits. We have many talented participants that put a lot of effort into their costumes and spend time sewing and creating the ultimate outfit!” says Momentum Senior Coordinator Janice Yates.

It’s not all about the dancing for our clients, though. They also get involved in the planning of the discos, from designing the invitation and creating playlists to ordering lights and food.
“Our clients especially love looking up the songs, and with assistance, they download the songs and make a playlist on our iPad. We value our clients and want to create a program that develops the individual’s life skills too”, says Momentum’s Service Manager, Vanessa Riggs.
The Empower teams in Casino and Tweed share a share a common goal of creating a unique experience at every disco night that caters to all participants’ wants, likes, and needs. The different themes provide diverse opportunities for everyone involved and encourage more people to participate.
“The best part about seeing our disco nights come to fruition is seeing the smiles it brings to our attendees. These inclusive events give our clients a place to express themselves and open up avenues to make meaningful friendships outside their normal circles,” says Janice Yates.
