Last year, our Supported Independent Living (SIL) client, Carol, proudly received Momentum’s Bravo Award acknowledging her hard work in increasing her independence abilities in her home.
One of the extraordinary skills Carol learned was making a barista-made coffee that her housemates and support workers appreciated, and was highlighted in her nomination when she won a Bravo award.
Growing up, Carol became a successful entrepreneur and used to own a profitable discount shop in Sydney when suddenly she found herself fighting for life after having a stroke. With the support of her father, Carol moved to Tweed Heads to get the proper support needed and live closer to her family.
Carol faced many challenges when she lost her independence after her stroke, and her life changed when she found herself living in an aged care home, feeling isolated. With the support of Momentum Collective, three years later, Carol found purpose in life, and she started looking for ways to gain her autonomy back and live her best life.
Since moving to Momentum’s SIL, Carol’s well-being has improved significantly. She receives full-time in-home support and has made positive connections with her support workers and housemates.
“With the support of Momentum Collective, I started to work on some life goals and gain my independence back like making my own coffee, going grocery shopping every week with my support workers, and recently looking for a job”. – SIL client, Carol.
Momentum Collective Support Worker, Margo, has worked alongside Carol for nearly two years now. She has first-hand witnessed Carol’s confidence increase and dedication shine as she works through her personal goals.
“Carol is focusing extremely hard on finding a job, and she is determined to find a job specifically working with cash as she developed those skills years back working in her own business,” said Margo.
Carol had her first job interview at one of our Momentum Collective Op Shops, and although she was feeling nervous, she felt proud of herself as it had been sixteen years since the last job interview.
“We are tremendously excited for Carol! She is just so delighted by the thought of attending more job interviews and finding a job that keeps her busy while increasing her independence skills”, mentioned Margo.
The world is Carol’s oyster, and we cannot wait to see her achieving her purpose while enjoying life! Stay tuned for when we catch up with Carol next and find out what dream job she has landed.
