Meet Alexandra, one of our compassionate Case Workers. With firsthand experience, Alexandra witnesses the profound impact of contributions on our Women and Children’s Refuge. Here, every donation, regardless of size, plays a crucial role in providing necessary aid and resources to women and children fleeing violence.

Last year, Alexandra embarked on a mission to incorporate the cultural essence of Bundjalung country into our Women and Children’s Refuge. “Even though our clients may not stay for long, it’s vital for them to experience a sense of calm and relaxation in their surroundings”, she explains.

Alexandra reached out to local Aboriginal artist Katrina Graves through her Instagram platform and found a willing partner in both Katrina and her sister, Sinead Singh. The connection was instant as the sisters were inspired to support the Women and Children’s Refuge after escaping a dangerous situation with their mother. This led to the resilient siblings living in a women’s refuge on the Gold Coast.

Katrina’s determination to infuse joy and strength into our refuge through her artwork was evident. The piece is titled “Brand New Day” and symbolises ‘the gift of a fresh start and finding beauty in each day.’

In addition to the remarkable artwork donated earlier this year, our Women’s and Children’s Refuge in Tweed Heads receives consistent support from local businesses, artists, and the community annually.

“The contributions uplift our clients, and they feel empowered to regain confidence and independence,” says Alexandra.

“From food and fuel vouchers to essential packs and nurturing classes like meditation, yoga and sound healing, these donations create a secure environment for our clients to relax and start their healing journey.”

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our loyal donors and partners, including QCWA Coolangatta, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, Zonta, Bunnings Tweed, Kingscliff Saltwater Studio, Gardn Church, Daisy in Dots and Jai Vasicek. Their devoted support ensures that women and children in our refuges have access to the necessities and assistance needed to rebuild their lives and feel empowered.

If you want to make a difference, please consider donating to our Women and Children’s Refuge. We always welcome food and fuel vouchers, white goods vouchers, new furniture, linen, essential toiletries, baby items and clothing suitable for mothers and children of all ages.
